Kava 101

So what is kava?

The four questions everyone asks the bartender, answered before you walk in.

What is it?

A root from the South Pacific, brewed like tea and shared for about three thousand years. We serve it the traditional way, ground root and water poured into a cup, and as extracts in the flavored drinks. There is no alcohol in any of it.

How does it feel?

Calm without the fog. Shoulders drop, conversation gets easier, and you wake up tomorrow like a normal person. You will know within ten or fifteen minutes. No hangover, ever.

What does it taste like?

Earthy, peppery, honest. Your tongue tingles for about four seconds, then it fades. The tingle is how you know it is real kava. If earthy is not your thing, the mocktails hide it under cream and fruit.

How do I order?

Is there a sober bar in Monroe, Louisiana?

Yes. Visbar at 1100 Sterlington Rd, Suite C is Monroe's alcohol-free bar and lounge. There is no alcohol on the premises and never has been.

How late are you open?

Tuesday through Friday, 7am to 9pm. Saturday, 9am to 9pm. Sunday, 1pm to 6pm. Closed Monday. After 6pm the lounge is 18+.

Can people under 21 come in?

Yes. Because we serve no alcohol, the room is open to all ages during the day and 18+ in the lounge after 6pm. You must be 18+ to drink kava.

Is the double shell really free?

Yes. Join the email list, show the pass at the bar with any drink order, and a double shell of kava is on us. First-timers and regulars both count.

What does kava feel like?

Most people describe a calm, loose, sociable feeling: the edge comes off, conversation gets easier, and your head stays clear. It is not intoxicating the way alcohol is and there is no hangover.

Is kava safe?

Traditional water-extracted kava root, the kind served at a kava bar, has a long history of use. That said, it is not for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, take prescription medication, drink heavily, or have any liver concern, talk to your doctor before trying it. We're a lounge, not a clinic.

Questions people ask before their first visit.

Do I have to be 21 to come in?

No. Kava is 18+ and we check ID for anything with kava in it, including the mocktails. The room itself is all ages, and coffee, loose leaf teas, energy lemonades, and protein shakes are for everyone.

What does kava taste like?

Kava, sometimes spelled cava, tastes earthy, a little peppery, and your tongue tingles for a few seconds. The calm shows up a few minutes later. Most first-timers start with a single shell or a Dreamsicle mocktail, where the flavor is up front and the kava stays in the background.

Is there parking?

Yes. Free lot right in front of the door at 1100 Sterlington Rd, Suite C. We are five minutes from ULM.

Can I study or work here?

That is half the room most afternoons. Free WiFi, long tables, outlets, and nobody rushing you. Coffee from 7am Tuesday through Friday, and we are open till 9pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Do you serve food?

Snacks and protein shakes, not a full kitchen. The Fuel Shake is a real meal in a cup, and the superfruit shots are on the Health'd Up board. You can also order ahead on DoorDash for pickup or delivery.

Do I need a reservation?

No, walk in. For a group or a team night, message us on Google or call (318) 738-8111 and we will set it up.

Can I drive after kava?

Kava is alcohol-free and most people feel calm, not impaired. Start with a single shell your first time, take it slow, and see how you feel. If you are pregnant or take medication, check with your doctor first.

How much does it cost?

A single shell is $3.50 and a double is $6.75. Kava mocktails are $7.35, loose leaf teas $4.75, energy lemonades $6.75, and coffee starts around $3. Join the email list and your first double shell is free with any drink. ULM students take 10% off with a student ID.

What is the gong?

It gets rung when someone has their first shell, and the whole room says bula. If it is your first time, tell the bartender.

Coming from West Monroe, Ruston or Bastrop?

Easy. From West Monroe it is about ten minutes across the river to Sterlington Rd. From Ruston, about 35 minutes east on I-20, then north on US-165. From Bastrop, about 30 minutes south on US-165. Free parking in the lot out front, and we are open till 9pm Tuesday through Saturday, so there is time to make a night of it.
